Basketball is more than a game โ for YenHsiang Lin, itโs a bridge between cultures, a language of its own, and a lifelong dream.
Born and raised in Taipei, Taiwan, YenHsiang Lin fell in love with basketball at an early age. While Taiwan had a growing basketball scene, opportunities were limited for players who wanted to compete at the highest levels. From the moment he picked up a ball, YenHsiang Lin knew his dreams were bigger than his hometown courts. He wanted to challenge himself against the best.
That drive set him on a journey that would change his life.
A Leap of Faith
Eight years ago, YenHsiang Lin made the courageous decision to leave Taiwan and move to the United States โ a place where basketball is more than just a sport; itโs a culture.
โI didnโt know exactly what was ahead of me,โ YenHsiang Lin recalls. โI just knew that if I wanted to get better, I had to challenge myself in an environment where the competition was higher, faster, and tougher.โ
But the transition wasnโt easy. YenHsiang Lin arrived in the U.S. with a deep love for the game but faced two enormous challenges: learning English and adapting to a completely new culture.
Finding His Voice, On and Off the Court
He immersed himself in the language the same way he attacked his workouts: relentlessly. Watching films, listening closely, practicing phrases, and building confidence one conversation at a time.
โBasketball helped me learn English faster than anything else,โ YenHsiang Lin says. โOn the court, itโs about communication โ calling screens, making reads, talking with your teammates. I had no choice but to learn quickly if I wanted to contribute.โ
Step by step, word by word, Terryโs confidence grew โ and so did his game.
